The Venice Water City residential competition is a large residential development that encompasses over 400 acres of residential and commercial development organized into two phases. Situated in the Zhongyuan district of Zhengzhou in the Henan Province, first phase totaling 114 acres is already under construction. Phase two consists of 280 acres. The overall theme of the development is based on the famed Italian city of Venice with its distinct interrelationship between the built environment and canals creating a unique urban landscape. However, historically, canals also played an important infrastructural role in the history of Zhengzhou.

Our proposition for the second phase of the residential development seeks to go beyond the traditional housing design while respecting the cultural constraints and demands of the residential and commercial markets. Our project weaves a closer and integrated relationship between the diverse scales: the residential units, commercial-retail spaces, public-urban spaces, and the “natural” landscape. Each component works together to generate an overall environment that respects the function and demands of each element. A clear hierarchy of open public spaces are intertwined and layered with the housing complexes, parks, lagoon, and canals to generate a coherent urban strategy.

Venice Water City has a strong conceptual basis. Its duality between the water-canals and the built environment presents a unique design that has attachments to not only the more popular western influenced residential design but also has Chinese historical relevancy. Therefore it is neither an arbitrary choice nor catering to a stylistic- marketing strategy. It is a subtle association of two interrelated worlds.

Composed of large high-end residential and commercial development with a large collective green and water park- garden, health facilities, day-care centre and featuring diverse units from 2BR, 3BR and 4BR with live-work lofts and Sky villas. An active street-scape, rich residential gardens and internal canals make this a high-value development in Zhengzhou.
